Mom grew up in the aftermath of The Great Depression. Firstborn on a working farm, she worked hard alongside her father to make a living for the family. Many of her Thanksgivings were spent finishing up the labor required to deliver crops to market. She married young and soon found herself in an abusive marriage with two children. To earn her family's way out of the poverty brought on by my father's alchoholism, she learned to type on a rented typewriter, went to a local vocational school, and entered the workforce long before it was fashionable for women to work outside the home. Her favorite song is "It is Well With My Soul." |
